Staying Warm while Vegan

…Without moving to a tropical climate.  I live in the Rocky Mountains at 9,000 feet above sea level and I like living here.  Even when it’s 13 degrees Fahrenheit outside during the day and especially when it’s snowing.

Wanna go for a swim?

Vice Cream Cake

Ice cream cake is simple: cookie crumbles, ice cream, and syrup and/or preserves.

Remember when cookie used to be spelled “cooky?”  I wasn’t alive then, but I read my mom’s copy of Ginny’s Baby-sitting Business (Catherine Woolley, 1969) in 2001, and there it was, “cooky” instead of cookie. Read more →

Summer Trip Heart Attack

Road food is not kind to vegans…or really, to anyone.  TC and I were eating a very unhealthy breakfast of fries (for me) and French toast (for him) somewhere in South Dakota and he said, “Ugh, I feel like I’m gonna have a heart attack after eating all this heavy food this trip.”  Which led to a certain song being stuck in my head for the rest of the trip…

“Chai” It: Into It/ Over It, High Altitude Edition

gothic granola national forest camping colorado

It’s time for another round of Into It/Over It, the High Altitude Edition.  The point of this type of post is to point out a negative and replace it with a positive (and sometimes just point out positives).  What does a picture of this awesome-yet-undisclosed location have to do with Gothic anything?  If you have ever read any Gothic literature (FrankensteinThe Castle of OtrantoCarmillaDracula, et cetera), they can be read as travel journals, with significant chunks of text devoted to describing landscapes and characters’ travels.  I re-read Carmilla  on a weekend’s camping trip, and the descriptions of Styria (region in modern-day Austria and Slovenia) reminded me of the critical angle of Gothic literature as travel journals.

Maraschino Cookies, Music, and Lip Balm

Fun news in my life: I got food poisoning and have been having some ongoing nausea for the last week and a half, hence no blog posts.

Digestive turmoil aside, other things I have been doing include working (open enrollment season! Aaagh!), listening to “new to me” music, instagramming my Halloween socks, following P90X Plus, sorting Legos, and writing.

New Lego Halloween Monsters in some kind of metal music video setup that TC made:

These are not Breast Cancer Awareness Month cookies.  They just…I’m just going to stop here.  TC asked for maraschino sugar cookies and this is what I found.

No Mercy on the Fury Road

Instead of going to Wasteland Weekend this year, we mountain biked from Rollins Pass to Steamboat Springs in four days, well over 100 miles apart, on both trails and state highways.  The highest (in elevation) point was the start at Rollins Pass (11,676 feet) and the lowest point was Steamboat Springs (6,695 feet).  We traveled at least 20 miles or more a day (I stopped counting after we hit 20 each day; there is a solid 10 mile discrepancy between Google Maps and the signs on the side of the roads in mileage measurement, in some locations). Whoop-de-freaking-do, Colorado.
